Here is a list of common hazards and some safety tips to be considered during welding:

Arc – Radiation

Welding is one of the primary sources of arc radiation. Long-term exposure emits severe ultraviolet and infrared radiations that can lead to severe skin hazards and various health problems, like swelling of the cornea causing eye burns.

Safety Tips:

• Wear proper helmet
• Use safety glasses
• Wear full covering protective clothing
• Wear leather gloves
• Screen the welding zone when welding in open

Electric Shock

When your hands or any other part of the body create a connection between the welding equipment and the welding electrode, there could be an electric shock.

Safety Tips:

• Do not touch live metal parts of any machine with bare hands
• Repair all the loose connections before beginning your welding work
• Never weld while standing near a wet surface or on water
• Keep your body and hands dry
• Use proper cable connectors

Toxic Gases and Fumes

During the welding process, a significant amount of smoke is released carrying gas byproducts and toxic metal fumes. These fumes are a combination of metallic oxides and fluids that can cause asphyxiation or even explosion.

Safety Tips:

• Adequate ventilation and air circulation in the place of work
• Do not weld on wet surfaces
• Keep your face away from the toxic fumes and gases
• Use a fume extractor

Heat, Fire & Explosions

A welding arc can create extreme temperatures, giving rise to fire and explosion. It is more risky as its sparks can fall up to far distances.

Safety Tips:

• Check your workplace properly for any inflammable gases
• Wear protective overalls
• Wear safety glasses
• Know how to use the fire alarms and extinguishers
• While working in an elevated place, keep a watcher on the ground
